WASHINGTON, D.C. — Former President Donald Trump has escalated his criticism of Harvard University, accusing the institution of withholding information about its international students and misusing federal funding, following a federal judge’s decision to block his administration’s attempt to revoke the university’s ability to enroll foreign students.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that nearly 31% of Harvard’s student body is made up of international students and alleged that the university has failed to cooperate with federal requests for details about these students.
“Why isn’t Harvard saying that almost 31% of their students are from FOREIGN LANDS, and yet those countries, some not at all friendly to the United States, pay NOTHING toward their student’s education, nor do they ever intend to. Nobody told us that!” Trump wrote.
He further stated: “We want to know who those foreign students are, a reasonable request since we give Harvard BILLIONS OF DOLLARS, but Harvard isn’t exactly forthcoming. We want those names and countries. Harvard has $52,000,000, use it, and stop asking for the Federal Government to continue GRANTING money to you!”
The comments came shortly after a U.S. District Court judge in Boston temporarily blocked the Trump administration’s move to strip Harvard of its Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) certification—a designation that allows the university to enroll international students.
The ruling followed a lawsuit filed by Harvard, which described the revocation as a “blatant violation” of the U.S. Constitution and federal law. The university warned of an “immediate and devastating effect” on its operations and over 7,000 foreign students.
“With the stroke of a pen, the government has sought to erase a quarter of Harvard’s student body, international students who contribute significantly to the university and its mission,” the university stated in its court filing.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem issued the revocation notice last week, accusing Harvard of “fostering violence, antisemitism, and coordinating with the Chinese Communist Party on its campus.”
Harvard has also filed separate legal challenges against the administration over what it describes as unconstitutional interference in its academic operations, including curriculum changes, admissions policies, and faculty hiring practices.
The legal and political standoff highlights broader tensions between elite academic institutions and conservative efforts to reshape higher education policy in the U.S.
