MORRISTOWN, N.J. — Former U.S. President Donald Trump issued a scathing rebuke of Russian President Vladimir Putin after Russia launched its most intense aerial assault on Ukraine since the war began, killing at least 12 people and injuring dozens more.
Speaking to reporters at Morristown Airport in New Jersey on Sunday, Trump expressed shock and frustration over Putin’s actions, saying, “I’m not happy with Putin. He’s killing a lot of people. I don’t know what the hell happened to him.”
In a fiery critique, Trump—who has long claimed a cordial relationship with the Russian leader—said he no longer recognizes the man he once considered a diplomatic partner.
“Always gotten along with him, but he’s sending rockets into cities and killing people, and I don’t like it at all,” Trump said. “Something happened to this guy, and I don’t like it.”
Russia Launches Massive Assault: Over 360 Missiles and Drones Strike Ukraine
The overnight attack on Sunday saw Russia unleash a barrage of 367 missiles and drones across Ukraine, targeting major cities including the capital, Kyiv. The Ukrainian Air Force reported intercepting 45 missiles and downing 266 drones, but the sheer volume of the strike caused widespread devastation across more than 30 cities and villages.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the attacks “brutal and unjustified,” warning that without stronger international action, the violence would continue unabated.
“The world may go on vacation, but the war continues,” Zelenskyy said. “America’s silence, and the silence of others, only encourages Putin.”
Trump’s Online Outburst: “Putin Has Gone Absolutely CRAZY”
Trump also took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to voice outrage at the strikes that coincided with a sensitive prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia.
“I’ve always had a very good relationship with Vladimir Putin of Russia, but something has happened to him. He has gone absolutely CRAZY! He is needlessly killing a lot of people, and I’m not just talking about soldiers,” Trump wrote. “Missiles and drones are being shot into cities in Ukraine for no reason whatsoever.”
Peace Talks Falter Amid Escalation
Trump recently engaged in a more than two-hour phone call with Putin as part of his ongoing effort to broker a ceasefire. He has also maintained communication with Zelenskyy to push for negotiations.
However, peace hopes suffered a major blow after Putin failed to appear at a scheduled peace summit in Turkey. The no-show has been widely interpreted as a sign that Moscow has little interest in pursuing a diplomatic solution.
Despite international appeals to de-escalate, Russia has continued to intensify its military campaign—raising concerns of further humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.
