Honolulu, HI – A United Airlines flight en route from Honolulu to Los Angeles was forced to return to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport late Tuesday night due to a potential security threat.
Flight UA1169, which departed Honolulu at 9:40 p.m., turned back approximately 90 minutes into the flight. It landed safely at 1:35 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
A United Airlines spokesperson confirmed the diversion was prompted by a message considered a “potential security concern,” though the exact nature of the message has not been disclosed. Upon landing, law enforcement boarded and inspected the Boeing 777. Officials have not confirmed whether anything suspicious was discovered.
Authorities are investigating the origin of the message. No arrests or suspects have been announced as of Wednesday morning.
United Airlines emphasized its commitment to passenger safety and said it is working to accommodate affected travelers. “We are rebooking customers on another flight to Los Angeles that departs later this evening,” the airline said.
The flight was carrying 339 passengers and 10 crew members.
The incident occurred the same day a passenger on a Hawaiian Airlines flight from San Diego to Honolulu was arrested for making a bomb threat. A flight attendant alerted the captain, prompting a search by authorities. No suspicious items were found, and the flight departed approximately six hours later.
