Washington, D.C. – Former U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton has expressed serious concerns about Pakistan’s ability to safeguard its nuclear weapons, backing recent remarks by Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh that questioned the safety of Islamabad’s nuclear arsenal.
In an interview with ANI, Bolton emphasized that the security of nuclear weapons remains a top priority for the United States, particularly in geopolitically unstable regions. Reflecting on his tenure in the George W. Bush administration, Bolton recalled accompanying then-Secretary of State Colin Powell to Pakistan after the 9/11 attacks, where concerns about nuclear security were directly raised with then-President Pervez Musharraf.
“The security of nuclear weapons is of very high priority for the United States anywhere in the world,” Bolton said. “It has always remained a concern, and given India’s shared border with Pakistan, it’s a very important concern.”
Bolton warned of the potential consequences if nuclear weapons were to fall into the wrong hands. “We can never be completely relaxed about this. The possibility of these weapons being accessed by terrorists or used by rogue commanders is extremely dangerous,” he added.
Calls for International Oversight
The remarks come in the wake of Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s recent call for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to take greater responsibility in monitoring Pakistan’s nuclear program. During a visit to Jammu and Kashmir, Singh questioned whether nuclear weapons are safe in the hands of what he called an “irresponsible and rogue nation.”
Concerns Over Turkish-Pakistani Military Ties
Bolton also commented on Pakistan’s military collaboration with Turkey, specifically its acquisition of Turkish drones. He warned that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s foreign policy ambitions and military outreach merit close scrutiny.
“Turkey’s drones are not the most sophisticated, but Erdogan’s administration has expansive goals beyond its borders,” Bolton said. “Their growing military cooperation with Pakistan is something that must be watched very closely.”
Bolton concluded by underscoring the need for continued international vigilance regarding both nuclear security and emerging defense alliances in the region.
