Washington, D.C. – South African President Cyril Ramaphosa visited the White House on Wednesday for a meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump, marked by moments of tension, awkward humor, and pointed political remarks.
The meeting turned contentious when Trump was questioned by a reporter about the controversial acceptance of a $400 million Boeing 747 from Qatar, intended for use as a temporary Air Force One. Attempting to defuse the moment, Ramaphosa quipped, “I don’t have a plane to give you.”
Trump, initially amused, responded, “If your country offered the United States Air Force a plane, I would take it.” However, when pressed again about the ethics of accepting such a gift, Trump grew visibly irritated.
“You’re a bad reporter. You ought to be ashamed of yourself,” he said, before refusing to take additional questions from the journalist.
Ramaphosa tried to steer the conversation back to humor, repeating his earlier joke. Trump replied with a grin, “I wish you did. I would take it,” prompting light laughter from the South African leader.
Trump Shows Graphic Video of White Farmers
The encounter took a more serious turn earlier in the meeting when Trump showed Ramaphosa a video that he claimed depicted “burial sites” of over a thousand white farmers in South Africa. Trump also presented articles alleging targeted killings of white landowners.
“These are burial sites right here… they’re all White farmers,” Trump said as the footage played.
Ramaphosa, who appeared expressionless during the video, calmly challenged the narrative, stating, “There is crime in South Africa, and the majority of victims are Black.” When he inquired about the source of the video, Trump interjected, “The farmers are not Black.”
Despite the tense moments, Ramaphosa struck a diplomatic tone afterward. When asked by reporters how the meeting had gone, he responded, “It went very well.”
