As summer travel picks up, the U.S. Department of State has issued updated travel advisories, including a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” warning for several countries. Among them are Somalia, Venezuela, Russia, North Korea, Burma (Myanmar), and Burkina Faso, where significant safety and security risks are present, and U.S. government assistance may be limited or unavailable.
Contrary to some confusion, Switzerland remains under a Level 1 advisory — the lowest risk level — advising travelers to exercise normal precautions. Other countries in the same category include Japan, Paraguay, Czechia, Kyrgyz Republic, Kuwait, and El Salvador.
The travel advisory system includes four levels:
Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions – Minimal risk, but travelers should remain alert to differences in conditions abroad.
Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution – Heightened risk in certain areas. Countries include Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, Peru, Cuba, Indonesia, and others.
Level 3: Reconsider Travel – Serious safety and security threats are present. This includes countries such as Bangladesh, Colombia, Uganda, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Level 4: Do Not Travel – Life-threatening risks; government support may be severely limited.
Travelers are urged to check the latest guidance for their destinations on the official U.S. State Department website and consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for health-related updates. Enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and securing comprehensive travel insurance are also strongly recommended.
