NEW YORK — A 59-year-old man died Saturday morning following an explosion aboard a boat docked on the Hudson River, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. while the man was conducting work involving open flames or sparks, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Another worker at the city-owned Hunts Point facility was injured and transported to the hospital, while a third declined medical treatment, FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief David Simms said.
Emergency responders arrived after a 911 call and found the victim unconscious in the water. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the New York City Police Department reported. His identity has not yet been released.
The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
The blast also caused raw sewage to spread across the boat’s deck, prompting decontamination protocols for firefighters and other first responders, FDNY Deputy Chief Kevin Simms said.
