SACRAMENTO, CA — Stan Atkinson, a beloved and pioneering figure in Sacramento television journalism, has died at the age of 92, his family confirmed. A respected voice in local news for nearly four decades, Atkinson’s career spanned roles at two of the region’s top stations, KCRA and KOVR, where he became known for his calm on-air presence and fearless field reporting.
A Career Built on Courage and Credibility
Initially setting out for a career in radio, Atkinson transitioned into television journalism in a twist of fate that would define Sacramento broadcasting for generations. Recalling his unexpected shift into TV during a 2024 interview on Primetime Sacramento, Atkinson said with a laugh, “They told me, ‘You’re going back to work at the TV station.’ I told them, ‘I can’t—I don’t even have a coat and tie!’”
What followed was a storied career marked by journalistic courage and integrity. Atkinson reported from global conflict zones, including war-torn regions in Cambodia, Afghanistan, and Serbia. In one particularly dangerous assignment, he narrowly avoided injury when a sniper’s bullet missed him by mere inches. “I felt a .30-caliber part the hair on the back of my neck,” he once recalled. “It didn’t hit me, but it came close.”
He was equally impactful at home, leading investigations that brought critical local issues to light. One of his early exposés uncovered poor conditions at a hospital in Auburn, earning him widespread praise.
A Deep Connection to Sacramento
Despite having opportunities to advance in larger markets, Atkinson remained committed to Sacramento—a city he proudly called “special.” His loyalty to local journalism made him a trusted presence in homes across Northern California and a symbol of journalistic integrity.
After retiring from television in 1999, Atkinson remained active in civic and philanthropic efforts, continuing to serve the Sacramento community he loved. He also cherished time with his large and close-knit family. According to CBS News, he was a grandfather to 14 and a great-grandfather to 18.
A Private Goodbye for a Public Icon
According to his family, a private service will be held to honor Stan Atkinson’s life and legacy. Sacramento mourns the loss of not just a news anchor, but a community icon whose dedication to truth and service leaves a lasting impact.
