Rock guitarist, singer, and producer Rick Derringer, best known for his classic hit “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo” and his early success with The McCoys, has died at the age of 77. His passing was confirmed Monday by his caregiver Tony Wilson in a Facebook post. Derringer died in Ormond Beach, Florida. No cause of death was provided.
A Life of Music That Spanned Generations
Derringer first rose to fame at just 17 years old with his band The McCoys and their 1965 hit “Hang On Sloopy,” which climbed the charts and made him a teenage rock star. His breakout solo hit, “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo,” became an enduring anthem and was recently revived in pop culture with its use in the fourth season of Stranger Things.
His solo album All American Boy (1973), which featured “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo,” also included standout instrumental tracks like “Joy Ride” and “Time Warp.”
Studio Legend and Versatile Talent
Derringer’s influence extended far beyond his solo work. He was a sought-after session guitarist, lending his talents to albums by Steely Dan (Countdown to Ecstasy, Katy Lied, Gaucho), Todd Rundgren, Barbra Streisand, Kiss, and Air Supply — notably on their hit “Making Love Out of Nothing at All.”
He delivered the iconic guitar solo on Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and worked extensively with Cyndi Lauper during the 1980s, playing on three of her albums and joining her on tour, including performances of the hit “True Colors.”
A Grammy-Winning Producer and Pop Culture Icon
In 1984, Derringer earned a Grammy Award for producing Weird Al Yankovic’s breakout album Eat It, which featured parodies like “Eat It” and “Who’s Fat.” His role in shaping Yankovic’s early sound marked another high point in a diverse career.
In 1985, Derringer turned his attention to sports entertainment, producing the World Wrestling Federation’s The Wrestling Album. He co-wrote and performed several tracks, including “Real American,” which would go on to become the iconic entrance theme for wrestling superstar Hulk Hogan.
He also toured with Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band, continuing to share the stage with legendary artists.
