An unnamed actor has reportedly exited the set of Madden, the upcoming biopic of legendary football coach John Madden, citing alleged unprofessional behavior by director David O. Russell. The film stars Nicolas Cage in the title role and Christian Bale as fellow coaching icon Al Davis.
According to a report by TMZ, the incident occurred during a scene rehearsal last Friday. Cast and crew members claim that Russell used the N-word during an impromptu monologue, upsetting the actor involved and several others, who then walked off set. Filming reportedly ceased for the day. The report also notes the actor’s discomfort with a planned nude scene, which allegedly further strained relations with the director.
Studio Responds
However, studio sources offered a different account. They told TMZ that the controversial line was suggested by the actor—not Russell—and was ultimately not used in the scene. They also insisted that nudity was discussed in advance and handled through an intimacy coordinator. Despite the actor’s objections, the studio maintains that Russell responded calmly and professionally.
