WASHINGTON STATE – At least 3 people remain missing after a boat sank off the coast of Possession Sound, north of Seattle, on the afternoon of May 21. One man was rescued by passing boaters, according to a statement from the Everett Police Department.
Authorities were alerted to the incident at approximately 1:10 p.m. The 26-foot vessel, carrying four people, began taking on water while the group was reportedly out shrimping. A man in his 50s was rescued and reported that three others—a man in his 60s, a man in his 20s, and a woman in her 40s—were also on board.
Emergency responders arrived to find the boat largely submerged. Efforts to tow the vessel to shallower water were unsuccessful, and the boat ultimately sank.
Multiple agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, deployed rescue swimmers, dive teams, marine units, drones, and other equipment in a coordinated search effort. The search was suspended overnight but was expected to resume on May 22.
The Everett Fire Department has since confirmed the operation has transitioned to a recovery mission, indicating the missing individuals are presumed deceased. The relationship between the passengers, if any, has not been confirmed.
The U.S. Coast Guard has urged mariners in the area to maintain a sharp lookout and asked anyone with information to contact their command center at 206-217-6001.
The survivor is reportedly uninjured, police said. The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
